To make backups for our computer (provided thanks to the Story County IT Department as they upgraded their systems), we recently purchased a Western Digital 160 GB Passport. This provides plenty of space to make multiple backups of the 20 GB computer.
We initially plugged this into the USB hub; but, found that the computer wanted us to install the disk rather than recognizing it automatically. We were able to make it work properly - have it recognized as an additional disk - by plugging it directly into the USB port (the lower port was used).
With this setup we were able to copy files for backup readily.
